I probably don’t need to tell anyone who found a site like this that social media is trash. But man, it really is. I just don’t think humans are evolved enough to handle a forum that includes the entire damn world.
When you post content online, most of the time it’s never seen by the masses. If you have a few followers it finds its way into their timeline, you get a few likes, and that’s it. But every now and then the mysterious algorithm decides to push your fresh new post everywhere.
We’ve been trained to feel like this is the moment. It’s gonna be great. Going viral is good, isn’t it? Well, you haven’t read all the comments yet.
The comment section online has become a cesspool of zingers, cruel observations, and supposed scholars of every field. Yeah, there are nice comments out there — maybe more nice ones than mean ones. But let’s be honest, the rude ones sting.
I know you’ve scrolled through shorts on whatever platform you use and seen a video with a ton of comments and thought, “Huh, the video isn’t that special — I wonder why it has so much interaction.” Then you check the comments and realize the video went viral simply because the comment section was picking everything apart.
I was watching a short of a dude putting up fencing. He was showing how to measure the height and design the fence on a slope. It wasn’t polished. It was raw, but I got the point. Just a regular dude trying to make a video on a hot day, trying to help some strangers on the internet.
I checked the comments to find people making fun of his appearance, how he dressed, the way he talked. They said his advice was stupid and that you should do it some other way instead. One comment said “2 minutes of my life I’ll never get back.” It was…sad.
The other day I decided to check on my YouTube channel for reselling that I made a few years ago. I’ve posted off and on, but I’ve been on a permanent hiatus lately because, well…comments. Not gonna lie, I just don’t have the tough skin for it.
On my channel a lot of comments came from people who just read the video title and didn’t listen to anything I said. A few were sharper towards my appearance. One lady didn’t like my long luscious hair. She must have been balding. 😉
But the latest comment on my last few videos was: “Wow, no video in 8 months. I guess he had to go get a REAL job.”
What the fuck, people. I made a point on my channel to be a more real reseller. I never talked big numbers. I was always honest about my experience and even admitted when sales were slow and I was having trouble. But some people just watch to see you fall.
The internet wasn’t always like this. Social media sucks. I don’t know else to say. Let’s just all try and be little nicer and more patient with each other. Please.
